Palladius Evening Prayer, 6th July 2020.
According to tradition, Palladius, a deacon at Rome but probably a native of Gaul, urged Pope Celestine to send Bishop Germanus of Auxerre to the British Isles to combat the Pelagian heresy. He was himself sent as bishop, two years later in 431, to continue this work. He landed in Ireland before the beginning of Patrick’s mission. He appears to have been expelled from Ireland after a short time. He continued his work in Scotland, where his name is linked with Airthrey near Stirling, with which Serf, possibly a disciple of his, is also associated, and also with Fordoun in the Mearns, where he is said to have died. Serf is one of the heroes of the Celtic Church known to us only through fragments of his story which are not always consistent. Tradition locates his activity at Culross and in the foothills of the Ochils, where he evangelized the Pictish tribe occupying the land to the north of the Forth. Also associated with him is the village of Dysart, a name derived from his retreat or ‘desertum’. He is thought to have been a disciple of Palladius and to have fostered and educated Kentigern, which would place his activity in the first half of the sixth century. Kershaw, Simon. Irenaeus of Lyons Morning Prayer, 30th June 2020
Irenæus was probably a native of Smyrna, born in about the year 130. As a boy, he had heard Polycarp preach, who had in turn been a disciple of the apostle John. Irenæus is thus one of the important connections between the apostolic Church and the second century. He studied at Rome, and became a priest at Lyons in Gaul, succeeding as bishop upon the martyrdom of his predecessor in 177. He contended against the mythological, unhistorical beliefs of the Gnostics, giving positive value to the full humanity of the incarnate Christ, and affirmed the public teaching rôle of the episcopate to combat false doctrine. He is honoured as the first great Catholic theologian, one who drew upon the emerging traditions of East and West. Irenæus died in about the year 200. Kershaw, Simon. Alexander Jolly Evening Prayer, 27th June 2020.
Born in Stonehaven in 1756, Alexander Jolly was educated at Aberdeen, ordained in Peterhead and sent to minister at Turriff. After almost twelve years he moved to Fraserburgh, where he spent the rest of his life. A man of great learning and deep personal devotion, he was consecrated in 1796 as coadjutor to Bishop Macfarlane, who had superintendence of Moray, Ross and Argyll and Caithness. When Caithness was disjoined in 1798 Alexander was unanimously elected by the four presbyters of Moray as their diocesan. His wisdom guided the church through the difficult years which followed the repeal of the Penal Laws, and his learning and saintly life brought considerable prestige to the church he loved.
