TENEBRAE
Tenebrae, from the Latin word for “shadows,” has been observed in the church of Jesus Christ since the fourth century. During the service, the readings recall the events that led Jesus to the cross, and we will extinguish eight candles, one by one, dramatising the suffering and death of Jesus. The diminishing light symbolises the fading devotion of the disciples and the sin of the world. At the end of the service the sanctuary will be dark. Following “Were You There,” one candle will be relit, symbolising the hope of Jesus’ promised resurrection. To fully participate in this service you need to be able to reduce the level of light in your room 8 times. I recommend beginning with 8 lit candles in an otherwise (as) dark (as you can manage) room. Each time you see 🕯, extinguish one candle. Saturays: From Psalm 142. 1 I cry to the Lord with my voice;*to the Lord I make loud supplication.2 I pour out my complaint before him*and tell him all my trouble.3 When my spirit languishes within me, you know my path;*in the way wherein I walk they have hidden a trap for me.4 I look to my right hand and find no one who knows me;*I have no place to flee to, and no one cares for me.5 I cry out to you, O Lord;*I say, ‘You are my refuge,my portion in the land of the living.’6 Listen to my cry for help, for I have been brought very low;*save me from those who pursue me, for they

Fridays: From Psalm 1. 1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked,*nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful!2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord,*and they meditate on his law day and night.3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither;* everything they do shall prosper.4 It is not so with the wicked;*they are like the chaff which the wind blows away.5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes,*nor the sinner in the council of the righteous.6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,*but the
