Easter 3 Evening Prayer, Wednesday, 29th April 2020

Holy One, make speed to save us: O God, come quickly to help us.

Glory to God, Source of all being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit;*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever.  Amen.

Wednesdays: From Psalm 114, In exitu Israel

Hallelujah! When Israel came out of Egypt,
the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech,
Judah became the sanctuary of the Lord
and Israel the dominion of God.
The sea beheld it and fled; Jordan turned and went back.
The mountains skipped like rams, and the little hills like young sheep.
What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? O Jordan, that you turned back?
You mountains, that you skipped like rams?
You little hills like young sheep?
Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
who turned the hard rock into a pool of water
and flint-stone into a flowing spring.

READING: Matthew 3:13–17

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.

PRAYERS
The power of the risen Christ sets us free from evil’s grip!
Lord, have mercy upon us.
The touch of the risen Christ heals our deepest wounds and sorrow!
Christ, have mercy upon us.
The life of the risen Christ swallows up our fear of death!
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

COLLECTS

O God, who alone can bring harmony to the minds of your faithful people: give us grace to love the things you command, and to desire the things you promise; that, amid the uncertain changes of this world, our hearts may be firmly fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. Amen.

WEDNESDAYS: Healing God, reach out to touch us in our weakness, rouse us to walk again, and nourish us with the bread of mystery, that, without easy answers, without cheap grace, we may bear witness to your transforming energy in us. Amen

Lord God almighty, come and dispel the darkness from our hearts, that in the radiance of your brightness we may know you, the only unfading light, glorious in all eternity. Amen.

The God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing: through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
