Evening Prayer, Easter 4 Tuesday, 5th May 2020

Holy One, make speed to save us: O God, come quickly to help us.

Glory to God, Source of all being, Eternal Word and Holy Spirit;*
as it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be for ever.  Amen.

Tuesdays: From Psalm 18, Diligam te, Domine

I love you, O Lord my strength,
O Lord my stronghold, my crag and my haven.
My God, my rock in whom I put my trust, my shield,
the horn of my salvation and my refuge; you are worthy of praise.
I called upon the Lord in my distress
and cried out to my God for help.
You heard my voice from your heavenly dwelling;
to your ears came my cry of anguish.

You reached down from on high and grasped me;
you drew me out of great waters.
You brought me out into an open place;
you rescued me because you delighted in me.

READING: Matthew 5:11–16

‘Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

‘You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.

‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

PRAYERS
The power of the risen Christ sets us free from evil’s grip!
Lord, have mercy upon us.
The touch of the risen Christ heals our deepest wounds and sorrow!
Christ, have mercy upon us.
The life of the risen Christ swallows up our fear of death!
Lord, have mercy upon us.

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Do not bring us to the time of trial, but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

COLLECTS

O God, the light of whose truth stretches out to those who go astray, that they may return to the path of righteousness: give your grace to all who profess themselves Christians, that they may cast out what is harmful, and pursue all that gives life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,one God, world without end. Amen.

TUESDAYS: O God, open our eyes, bridge the chasm of our imagination;, pierce us with your stare, penetrate our defences, face us with ourselves, that we might behold your face, see as we are seen and know as we are known even though the glass be dark. Amen

Lord God almighty, come and dispel the darkness from our hearts, that in the radiance of your brightness we may know you, the only unfading light, glorious in all eternity. Amen.

The God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing: through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
